How to Install Docker Compose on Ubuntu/Linux

To install Docker Compose using package go to Docker’s GitHub repository though it is available in the official Ubuntu repositories but it may not always be the latest version.

At the time of writing this article, the latest stable version of Docker Compose is version 1.25.0. Visit the Compose repository release page on GitHub and check if there is a new version available for download before downloading the Compose binary.

  1. Download the Docker Compose binary into the /usr/local/bin directory with the below curl command:
    • sudo curl -L “$(uname -s)-$(uname -m)” -o /usr/local/bin/docker-compose
  2. After downloading Docker Compose binar, apply executable permissions to the Compose binary:
    • sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/docker-compose
  3. Confirm the installation by running the below command which will display the Compose version:
    • docker-compose –version
      Output: docker-compose version 1.25.0, build b02f1306
